Surprise Balls

For Christmas one of my friends gave us a surprise ball. So I made some up for the rats (instead of the plastic toys I put a bit of food in the middle) they tended to chew through each layer rather than gently unwrap them! Anyway from the original ball we were left with long strips of crepe paper so we thought Wheeler would enjoy tidying some of it.

There was one time when he was in the hammock and was pulling the paper streamer in through the bars. When he was nearly at the end, the end of the strip flicked and ended up poking through a different bar. Wheeler thought this was another strip so started to drag it through. There was a priceless moment when he twigged that he was pulling the new bit in but the bit he'd dragged in and folded neatly was unfolding. I swear you could see him mutter a profanity as he turned back to pull the original section.

After such exertion it's time for a nap.

Cracker (wrapping paper, spare tube, tape and a treat) + rat = fun!

Hinging aff the hammock...

The latest trend in the world of Mortimer and Wheeler is to rest their heads off the hammock - they can sleep stretched out like this or open sleepy eyes and watch 'Murder She Wrote'!

ROUS

The Bosavi woolly rat was found in a crater in Papua New Guinea. These ROUS (Rodents of Unusual Size) like the creatures in The Princess Bride, except that instead of attacking humans they want to be our friends. I want one.

Trying to get comfy

Wheeler having tried to tidy the tissue box into the box he was hanging out in.

This was a snoozing Mortimer a year ago - I know so small so sweet.

Frozen Peas

Tom came across this idea online (at The Dapper Rat). It's simple idea:
  • get a dish
  • add some warm water
  • add frozen peas
  • give to rats!

Wheeler was pretty fast to work out that he could use his paw to scoop the peas towards him, Mortimer continued to dunk his head in to grab a pea. Wheeler refused to eat the pea husk, Mortimer was happy to eat the whole thing and left over husks (this may explain why Mortimer is a big rat!).

More Sleeping

Tom woke them up trying to take this and as usual they look pretty unimpressed with the whole awake idea.

Bubbles

While Wheeler took an interest and even chased the bubbles Mortimer remained completely unimpressed and just ignored them.

Hammock Take 2

Wheeler ate the knots (plus there were a few issues of separation in the weave so we had dangling nuts). So another hammock. This one is machine quilted with hand stitched holes for the hooks. It's also massive compared to the other one.

Hammock

Wheeler has been munching on the rope cargo net so now they are in danger of falling through. We can't afford another one just now - plus this is the second one he's munched through - so time to find a better solution. Fortunately Tom just trashed a pair of jeans so a bit of weaving and knoting later and voila!

Poorly Mortimer

Mortimer had a really bad cold. I ended up being late for work because I had to rush him to the vets. Panic not. A bit of medicine (apparently meant for pigeons) and he's much on the mend. Tom was so worried he wouldn't see him again when he left this morning he took a photo.

Let Sleeping Rats Lie part 2

Seriously I mean a lot!

Mini Mortimer and Wheeler

They sure are growing up - look at this photo taken when we first got Mortimer!

Here is our fist picture of Wheeler

and here is our first video of Wheeler! Complete with Tom discussing whither they are boys or not! I haven't posted the one of Mortimer because he hides for most of it :)

Recycling Bank Statements

The boys were very excited about their new bedding. We piled tons of it on the cage floor for them to drag into their rat friendly beer box.
We were upstairs and all we could hear was the constant rustle and thunk of the rats.
This is why:-

The boys also had an amazing time while Chris cleaned out their cage. I set up blankets and things on the couch for them to run around on. They were so cute hiding under layers and investigating. My two favourite parts though:
1. Mortimer standing upright on his back legs like a meercat, oh so cute.

2. Wheeler trying to climb the leather sofa by taking a running jump and not being able to grip on and sliding back down, again and again and again.

Sorry no photos though, was too busy keeping a close eye/ laughing.

Easter Eggs

A few weeks ago I got a very excited call at work.

It was Kateri.

She wanted to tell me that she had bought the rats easter eggs. Rat easter eggs.

I didn't know what was more concerning, that she had bought the rats easter eggs or that she had called me to tell me (instead of her husband).

The rats seemed to enjoy it any way!

Banana Fun

Last time the boys came to visit they overloaded on banana chips (sorry 'bout that) so this time I thought I'd give them the real deal.
The boys enjoyed their banana chunks. Nice and healthy too.
