Nelson - December 2010 - September 2012

We had to say goodbye to Nelson today. His ear infection was too far gone and he was suffering too much to justify prolonging his life. He just wasn't our little buddy anymore.

For a rat that was free there was nothing cheap about him. He won over Tom straight away when he saw him in the rescue part of Pets at Home in Coatbridge. Nelson had a winning personality and charmed his way into everyone's heart.
The smallest rat we've ever had it is hard to know exactly how old he was. Though his small size was entirely linked to the fact he was so activeas he was just as greedy as the others.
Nelson has stolen more food than any of the others, quick to pounce on anything left unguarded (even pinching Kirk's medicine the other day).
Despite being deaf and blind in one eye nothing stoped him, he had odd little habits that made us laugh and a determination and faith that he could manage just fine. When asleep, with his good eye down, he was almost impossible to waken but awake he'd never stop moving.
The best little white, one-eyed rat in the world.

Nelson goes to the vet

Another day and another vet trip this time for Nelson. Poor thing has picked up an ear infection so he (plus the three youngsters) get Septrin to nuke that infection. As if that wasn't bad enough he is losing sight in his good eye - it has developed a small ulcer and looks like it is starting to pro-lapse. So that means eye goo for both eyes at least twice every day. I may have to boil some eggs tonight to try and make it up to him.

Kirk pinching bread

So Kirk may be still wheezing but he is better today - so much brighter that he was pinching bread from his brothers!

Kirk has pneumonia

Kirk is really sick - he has pneumonia and is wheezing really badly. Been to vets, have drugs and have fed them to rat. All we can do is wait and see.
